{"id":2299,"date":"2018-04-02T20:38:34","date_gmt":"2018-04-02T12:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ywo.id.au\/blog\/?p=2299"},"modified":"2018-04-02T22:55:53","modified_gmt":"2018-04-02T14:55:53","slug":"the-acid-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ywo.id.au\/blog\/2018\/04\/02\/the-acid-test\/","title":{"rendered":"The acid test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that two Australian politicians, <a href=\"https:\/\/vic.liberal.org.au\/BernieFinn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard (Bernie) Finn MLC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vic.liberal.org.au\/CraigOndarchie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Craig Ondarchie MLC<\/a>, have earned public criticism for themselves and their <a href=\"https:\/\/vic.liberal.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political party<\/a> by calling on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moadoph.gov.au\/blog\/pairing-up-what-is-pairing-in-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pairing arrangements<\/a>\u00a0to excuse themselves from the Victorian Parliament\u00a0on religious grounds (due to Good Friday, just a few days ago)\u2014only to then return and vote on an issue (to the disadvantage of their political opponents, who had honoured the pairing arrangements, and were therefore two voting members down). <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-04-02\/victorian-liberals-condemned-by-labor-over-pairing-betrayal\/9610358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/victoria\/liberals-good-friday-stunt-a-double-insult-20180401-p4z7bc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a>, amongst other sources, have reported on the situation.<\/p>\n<p>There is debate about this controversy at many levels.\u00a0There have been questions about the genuineness of Finn and Ondarchie&#8217;s Christian beliefs, for example, but we do not know all of the details. Barney Zwartz&#8217;s report in <em>The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>\u00a0seems to be well balanced\u2014he notes that it is possible that Finn and Ondarchie did intend to absent themselves for the stated reasons, but apparently were then ordered to return by their political party&#8217;s leaders.<\/p>\n<p>One key concern from my point of view is that there appears to be a lack of questioning about who a &#8216;Christian&#8217; actually is. There are plenty of people in Australia who call themselves Christians\u2014around 52% of respondents to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/AUSSTATS\/abs@.nsf\/mediareleasesbyReleaseDate\/7E65A144540551D7CA258148000E2B85?OpenDocument\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian Census in 2016<\/a>\u00a0indicated Christianity, of one form or another, as their religion. With a response rate of around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/websitedbs\/D3310114.nsf\/Home\/Assuring%20Census%20Data%20Quality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">95%<\/a> to that census and a national population of around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.censusdata.abs.gov.au\/census_services\/getproduct\/census\/2016\/quickstat\/036?opendocument\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">23.4 million<\/a>, that meant somewhere around 11.6 million &#8216;Christians&#8217; in Australia at that time. Does this mean that there are that many genuine Christians in the country? I doubt it.<\/p>\n<p>Who, then, is to determine if the name of &#8216;Christian&#8217; is accurate for an individual claiming it? What is the acid test?
