I bought these in late 2010, back when they were still made by the original company, Sanyo. They have powered my Nikon D700 through tens of thousands of martial art photographs that I have taken over the past 15 years.

One of the key features of the D700 body is that it can shoot at 8 frames per second—essential for action photography—when powered appropriately. That means using the optional battery grip and either a powerful Nikon Li-ion battery (excellent performance, but also expensive) or a suitable set of eight AA batteries (which must be capable of supporting high power draw).

Sanyo and Panasonic Eneloop AA batteries, February 2026

After a bit of research at the time, I believed that Sanyo Eneloop batteries would be fit for purpose. But ‘fit for purpose’ does not do them justice; they have performed far better than I could have hoped for. Where normal NiMH batteries start losing their power retention capacity fairly quickly (typically, months), the Eneloops (which use Sanyo’s proprietary NiMH technology) have retained their capacity over a far, far longer lifespan. Practically speaking, the only reason I am retiring the Sanyo Eneloops is because there are signs of casing degradation, and I will not risk using batteries that might damage the camera.

Panasonic is now the company making the Eneloops. Where the original Sanyo Eneloops had a white casing, the new Panasonic Eneloops have a silvery-grey casing. (Note that these are the standard Eneloop batteries; there are premium versions that are black, or possibly other colours.)

Sanyo and Panasonic Eneloop AA batteries, February 2026

I have also used a set of four Sanyo Eneloops to power my Nikon SB-600 flash, and they are still going strong after 14 years.
