Russell and Antonelli took the first two starting positions for the sprint race, followed by defending champion Lando Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri (McLaren), and then the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar. Messrs. Russell and Antonelli battled through the early part of the race, but eventually Mr. Norris interjected to take and secure second place. Mr. Piastri lost out to Sir Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) early on, but managed to retake fourth place on the second-last lap. In the end, it was Mercedes and McLaren dominating the final classifications for the sprint race.

Mr. Russell continued his good form, taking pole position for the main race, followed by Mr. Antonelli for an all-Mercedes front row. Messrs. Norris and Piastri occupied the second row, and the Ferrari and Red Bull cars made up the remaining two rows, albeit with Ferrari in fifth (Sir Lewis) and eighth (Charles Leclerc).

There was a possibility of rain for the start of the race, and while parts of the track were damp, the rain never eventuated. The McLaren team had opted to start both its drivers on intermediate (wet-dry) tyres, but this gamble did not pay off. Mr. Piastri came into the pits for new tyres right at the end of Lap 1, and Mr. Norris followed on the next lap, putting both McLaren cars right down the order. At the front Messrs. Russell and Antonelli raced competitively for some time, but Mr. Russell’s power unit then failed, putting him out of the event. Mr. Antonelli proceeded to drive off into the distance with a comfortable lead. Sir Lewis and Mr. Verstappen battled hard with each other for the remaining two podium positions, and the Ferrari driver won out this time.

In the end, the classification had Mr. Antonelli (Mercedes), Sir Lewis (Ferrari), and Mr. Verstappen (Red Bull) on the podium, then Mr. Leclerc a distant fourth, and the rest of the field lapped by the frontrunners. Mr. Antonelli now has a commanding lead of more than 40 points over second-placed Mr. Russell in the drivers’ championship. The Ferrari duo are close behind and very evenly matched on points, and then the McLaren duo follows. In the constructors’ championship, Mercedes has a solid lead over Ferrari, with McLaren trailing behind and then Red Bull a distant fourth.

Mr. Antonelli has really come into his own this year—just his second season in Formula 1 racing—and will be a favourite for the drivers’ championship if he can stay in form and if Mercedes can continue to give him a top-performing, reliable car.

The Mercedes Formula 1 team continued its dominant performance at the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend, and not least of which part was Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s fourth race victory in a row.
