At the ninth race out of 22 for this year, the sprint race starting grid for the British Formula 1 Grand Prix<\/a> had Sir Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), George Russell (Mercedes), and then the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the leading places. Apart from an overtake to put Mr. Antonelli into the lead, there were many other overtakes but\u2014as various commentators have noted\u2014this was substantially due to tactical battery management and deployment. In the end, the sprint race saw Mr. Antonelli, Sir Lewis, and Mr. Norris finishing in the top three places.<\/p>\n

For the main race, Mr. Antonelli took pole position, followed by Messrs. Leclerc, Hamilton, and Russell. The two Ferrari drivers overtook Mr. Antonelli on the starting straight, and Mr. Piastri and Alexander Albon (Williams) suffered damage to their cars in separate incidents, seeing them fall to the bottom in the field before essential pitstops for repairs. Sir Lewis received a five-second time penalty for a jumpstart; his car had moved forward fractionally before the all-clear to start racing.<\/p>\n

The two Ferraris managed to stay in the lead for some time, until Mr. Antonelli overtook Sir Lews and appeared to settle into a comfortable second position, gradually seeking to catch Mr. Leclerc in the lead. In the middle stages of the race, Mr. Russell’s car reportedly had a punctured tyre and then there was a problem with Mr. Antonelli’s car, so both Mercedes cars fell down the order somewhat when they stopped for repairs.<\/p>\n

Near the end of the race, on lap 48, Mr. Verstappen crashed out with a major technical problem, apparently with his car’s rear wing. Race control deployed the safety car, and the race eventually finished under the safety car. Ferrari had a slow pitstop for Sir Lewis, seeing him lose a place unnecessarily to Mr. Russell.<\/p>\n

In the end, Messrs. Leclerc, Russell, and Hamilton stood atop the podium, and championship-leading driver Mr. Antonelli finished well down the order and out of the points-scoring positions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
