Christmas 2017

By this time of the calendar year, most of us are probably tired. Physically tired, mentally tired, and maybe emotionally tired, too. Weary. Burdened. The demands of life have worn us down. This state of affairs will be nothing new to anyone who has lived longer than a few years. Perhaps 2017 has been a year filled with work pressure, financial stresses, or family cares—perhaps even the illness or death of a beloved family member.

Not everyone acknowledges the need for a spiritual answer to weariness, but for those who do, a couple of passages from the Bible come to mind. The Lord Jesus Christ has said, “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Elsewhere in the Bible, there is assurance that “The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:5–7).

Of course, brief excerpts from any written work need to be taken in context, but those passages in particular came to mind when thinking about the weariness of life.
