Formula 1 racing was back in action at the Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix held over the weekend of 2–3 May 2026. Defending world champion Lando Norris (McLaren) took pole position and the win in the short-form sprint race, while teammate Oscar Piastri started from third and finished second.
In qualifying for the main race, Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) took pole position comfortably, with Max Verstappen (Red Bull) second and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) third. The Alpine team did well, outperforming the middle of the field to have both cars in the final round of qualifying.
The start of the race went badly for Mr. Antonelli; he dropped a few places, but was quickly on his way back to the front of the pack. A few incidents in the early part of the race led to deployment of the safety car, and Mr. Verstappen opted to pit for hard tyres, which presumably would see him through to the end of the race. Through the second half of the main event, Mr. Leclerc was unable to carry through the potential pace from the early part of the race, and he dropped down some places.
In the end, Mr. Antonelli took his third race win in a row, consolidating his lead in the drivers’ championship. Messrs. Norris and Piastri finished second and third, in McLaren’s best overall performance so far this season. Messrs. Verstappen and Leclerc received time penalties, which saw the latter fall to sixth place in the final classification—a dismal result, given his sterling start and early race pace.
Mercedes is now well ahead of the other teams in the constructors’ championship, and Ferrari is in second place—already a significant improvement, for now, over last year’s fourth place for the Italian team. McLaren is close behind in third place, but then the points tally drops away significantly to Red Bull in fourth place.
