Choosing a DSLR

Published on Author Yean Wei Ong

For low light action photography, having the right equipment is very important—but what is the ‘right’ equipment? Some years ago, my recommendation was that a DSLR and prime lens be the minimum level of equipment used for this kind of shooting. Mirrorless camera technology has advanced significantly since then, but practical functionality (particularly viewfinder and autofocus)… Continue reading Choosing a DSLR

Published on Author Yean Wei Ong

In today’s issue of The West Australian, Camera Electronic has advertised the Nikon D610 full frame body and Nikkor AF-S 50 mm f/1.8 prime lens for $1,786. This is a few hundred dollars less than I see at most other Perth retailers on-line, and is a very good price if you’re looking to get into full frame photography.… Continue reading Nikon D610 on special

Monitors for high quality imaging work

One of the most important tools for any digital photographer is a high quality computer monitor. There are many capable ‘standard monitors’ out there (the kinds we can buy for less than $200), but then there are the professional-quality monitors designed for imaging work—these range from several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars in price. It’s immediately clear… Continue reading Monitors for high quality imaging work

Comparing camera sizes

Published on Author Yean Wei Ong

There’s a handy on-line tool for visually comparing camera sizes at camerasize.com. I’m not certain that the measurements are all correct, though. For example, the thicknesses of the Nikon D70S and Nikon D700 bodies are specified as listed on Nikon’s website—78 mm and 77 mm, respectively—but the visual comparison indicates that the D700 is thicker… Continue reading Comparing camera sizes

A guide to lenses

Published on Author Yean Wei Ong

I just came across a nice guide to lenses, with both verbal and pictorial descriptions, by Armand Niculescu (29 March 2011). He goes over the basic parameters of lenses, as I’ve done, but provides more commentary and some helpful diagrams. It’s well worth taking a look if you’re learning what some of the technical terms mean.

Equipment recommendations

Published on Author Yean Wei Ong

I originally provided the comments below to the Rhee Tae Kwon-Do Perth Region Photography Group in 2008, and it might be of some help to publish it here (slightly edited). Equipment Photography is something in which equipment does play an important role, even if the most important part of taking a good photograph is the photographer.… Continue reading Equipment recommendations
